HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer Review

Not everyone wants to print in colour, so laserjet printers can be the best option. Some printer users only need to print black and white text and images in the form of bills, receipts, and web pages. The HP Laserjet Pro P1102W laser printer offers just this facility!

The Laserjet Pro P1102W comes in an attractive black case and measures just 34.9 (width), by 19.6cm (height). Included in the box is software CD, power cord, USB install cable, and a black print cartridge with an average yield of 700 pages. This special trial cartridge has a lower capacity than the CE285A.

Rather interestingly the driver software is stored on the printer, so you don't have to worry about losing the CD! This HP uses Smart Install (Windows only) which means you can be up and running in a couple of minutes. An added advantage is that multiple users can also install the software direct over the network.

The printer features a 150 page paper tray and a special 10 page feeder for envelopes and thicker media.

HP Auto On / Off automatically turns your printer on and off when you need it and can reportably uses 26 times less energy than traditional power save sleep mode products. This is particularly important for lazerjet machines because they use a lot of power. Fortunately the first printed page takes just 8.5 seconds, so no long delays waiting for the printer to warm up. After this HP claim 18ppm A4.

The P1102W costs more than many of its rivals and running costs can be high. However compatible CE285A (85A) toner cartridges are now available which will reduce the cost per print considerably. The drum is built into the cartridge meaning this gets replaced every time the toner runs out.
Print quality is completely satisfactory for most home and business tasks. The overall level of detail is good, and even greyscale photographs look realistic.

In summary, an attractive printer that produces pleasing results with eco-friendly crudentials. Unfortunately heavy users will need to replace the cartridge too often, however the machine is ideal for moderate monochrome printing purposes. It is a shame the HP Photosmart Pro P1102W only comes with a starter cartridge considering the higher initial purchase price of the machine compared to its rivals. Overall a safe buy for home and very small business duties.

Update: Cheap compatible toner cartridges are now availabel for this machine.
